OK, ya’ll. I’ve had several people pestering me about doing more with Lina’s parents. And, despite the fact that they’ve featured in several of my fanfics, I actually hate having to write them for the stupidest reason. I don’t know their names and I have no way of divining what Hajime Kanzaka would have named them. Therefore, I write them as minimally as possible. I also have this bizarre complex about getting something wrong, and their names are a big sticking point with me because of this. Granted, I did name them in “Fly Away,” but I was thinking of names that went with the theme of the story, so I never used those elsewhere.

So, to help me over this complex I have about naming them, I’m creating a poll. I’ve included several famous couples, several of which have a black haired male and red haired female (there’s no cannon evidence that I know of that Lina’s mom is a redhead, but that’s my own pet theory). One, Han and Leia, I chose because it’s so obvious from “Slayers” that HJ is a “Star Wars” fan, so I might as well include the cannon couple from those movies. Ya’ll have a week to pick your favorite and then I will go with that.

Anyway, click here and it’ll take you to the poll.

Was going through my Goodreads account and getting everything lined up for the new year, updating statuses on things I'd read and the like. As my tastes are rather eclectic I sometimes have a hard time finding what I'm in the mood to read, so I'll start several books at once until one latches me and I finish it. Just because I don't finish a book doesn't mean I didn't/won't like it, it just means I wasn't in the mood for it at that time. Barring something exceedingly dreadful, I give a book three shots before I abandon finishing it for good. So there were a few books to move to other shelves so my activity didn't show me as reading 6 books at one time.

I started thinking about how my ratings of books compare to my friends' and started thinking about how awkward it is when I really like a book that someone else hated, especially if I hold that person in high esteem, like my friend who teaches English lit. Started wondering if I was the only one, or if for other people it was more awkward when they hate something that someone else really loves, which doesn't bother me as much. Hence, pointless nosy poll below.

I started thinking about things I'd rated

During my re-watch, I've been wondering a lot about Dawn. How things would have panned out in season 1-4 if we saw her then. What would happen if she was killed. Poll fun below!

I have a weird obsession with etymology, the study of the origin and meaning of names. I also have a fascination with name popularity. I'm constantly pouring through the lists of the top 1000 names when they come out and read up on naming trends. I find it rather fascinating. Anyway, I was completely burned out and getting over it by watching season 4 of Buffy when I thought of this poll. Enjoy!

How much do you like the name Buffy? How about Cordelia? )

So today I'm doing the opposite of what I did yesterday. I'm wondering which episodes do you think get more love than they should?

This time I posted episodes that rated above an 8.6 on IMDB on the poll. I had a hard time coming with this cut off, as it allowed some episodes that I really didn't think were considered as highly as they were on to the poll. But to omit them would leave off episodes that I knew were crowd pleasers. I also put "Restless" on the poll, even though it rated an 8.5, because I figured it's one that you either love it or don't..

Okay, I got the idea for this poll...and then I had a bad gut feeling that my sis had probably already beaten me to it. So I went through her numerous polls and if she has, I did not find it. So...if you've done it already, sorry Gabs! Just yell at me.

Okay, with that out of the way, let me get to the point. You all know which episodes they are. I, Robot...You, Jane, Where the Wild Things Are, etc. Episodes in the Buffyverse that aren't known for their popularity. I want to know which ones you actually like despite the fact that they're not considered great, or that you think just aren't given their due. The ones that you slip into the DVD player when no one is looking to secretly relish...okay may be I'm exaggerating a bit but you get my point.

OK, at first I was going to attempt to be completely objective and only put the episodes that have a rating below a 7.0 on IMDB in the poll. If that seems high, well, most of the poorly rated episodes in fandom tend to hoover around a 6. So I guess we can take comfort in the fact that even at it's worst, Buffy still rates above average! However, season 3 threw me off by having the three episodes that I see panned (Dead Man's Party, Beauty and the Beasts and Gingerbread) rate between a 7.0 and 7.5. So for season 3 I upped it to any episode below a 7.5...So much for objectivity.

**Edit: Yeah, I misspelled assembly in the poll...too late to change it now!

Just a brief follow up on the poll in my previous entry, because numbers are fun.

163 people voted. Unfortunately, only 10 were male, meaning the results are skewed. Of the women who voted, 128 (83.7%) voted yes. 9 men (90.0%) voted yes. I also isolated the first 10 women who voted so that I could have a sample size similar to the male one to compare. Interestingly, 8 (80%) voted yes, which is the exact opposite of what I predicted.

I will say, this blows a major hole in my hypothesis. As a whole, the vast majority of people would find someone using their body for sex even if they had no memory of it and suffered no physical harm from it disturbing (89.5%). Even though the sample was skewed due to lack of male input, I will say it indicates that all people regardless of gender wants to have control over what happens to their body.
