Is it Halloween time already!? So excited for G's first Halloween! Can't wait for the weekend! Got plans to find costumes, go to the pumpkin patch, turn my garden into a graveyard...

I've not gotten a terrible amount of scary movie watching in this year, but there were a few movies/shows. Nothing that's become my new favorite thing though. Most was rather bland. There may be spoilers below.

more. )

Really, this is the type of movie that is best rented and watched with a group of people to MST. That said, this movie had a few things going for it and was so poorly executed that those things fell by the wayside. Yes, when the audience bursts into laughter at the "dramatic" ending, you know the creators were not getting the reaction they intended.

Spoilers for Skyline and Night of the Living Dead below. )

Write what you know, you know? That's one school of thought. I always found it limiting. No one knows what it's like to travel in deep space for months on end for instance. But then, if you get it wrong there's no one with experience to hit you over to head with it and tell you why you're wrong.

This is something of the rock and the hard place I feel for white people who are trying to include minorities in their work. If they don't try, they get lambasted. If they try and don't get it quite right, they get lambasted. I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt (I still cling to some naive hope that people generally want to do the right thing) and believe that most people try to do right but because they lack the life experience, get it wrong. You see the same thing with men writing female characters, straight people writing gays, etc.

Yet with tv at least, the writer has an important ally, the actor playing the character who is not like the writer. Long winded stuff under the cut. )

It's October! That means that Halloween, my favorite holiday, is just around the corner! And as the song from A Nightmare Before Christmas goes, "life's no fun without a good scare." So here's my list of the best horror films. And basically so you know what I look for, I love movies that have a good plot twist at the end that I never saw coming.

Be prepared for thrills and chills below the cut! )
